About Bates

Overview

Bates is one of 22 elementary schools in the Jackson Public School district. It serves students in grades K-5.

School Namesake

Gladys Noel Bates

Gladys Noel Bates, born in 1920 in McComb, Mississippi, is the school's namesake. She was an African-American Civil Rights pioneer and educator who filed a lawsuit, Gladys Noel Bates vs. the State of Mississippi, in 1948 charging salary discrimination against African-American teachers and principals. Ms. Bates resided in Denver, Colorado, where she has received numerous awards for her achievements as an educator and a community leader. She passed away Friday, October 15, 2010. Her family continues to work closely with Bates' staff and students.
